On Saturday the 7th of April 2001 Chepstow was host it's first Mascot race. The race was sponsored by the Heatherton Country Sports Park.
There were 17 runners declared for the race which was run on behalf of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Fund. The mascots were requested to parade in the parade ring, but the Glamoran county cricket club mascot Dino the Dragon was certainly lying down on the job.
The runners were asked to go down to the start and were milling around in the blazing heat.
Suddenly it was all too much for Spytty the dog and he was conserving his energy by lying down at the start.
The runners were called in and were asked to line up the final list of runners were ( From Left to right).

They got off to a flying start all except Cyril the swan who stumbled at the start, but this was not to be much of a handicap because after about one quarter of the distance, Freddy the Fox broke away from the pack and sped into the lead.
At the end of the one furlong race freddy was still a very long way ahead of his rivals and on to the winning tape an easy winner. And so onto the presentations.
