The Grandstand

Chepstow Racecourse is my local course and it stages both flat and national hunt races in the course of a year. The jump racing which takes place 14 times a year is of a much higher quality than the flat racing which takes place 9 times a year.
The jump season highlight is the Coral Welsh National which occurs in December. This race always has some high class jumpers in it and the winners often go on to bigger and better things.

 Party Politics

Horses such as Party Politics who finished only second to Carvill's Hill
in the 1991 Welsh National and went on to win the Aintree National in 1992.
There were other big names who ran well at Chepstow such as Corbiere who won a Welsh and Aintree National for trainer Jenny Pitman.

Cool Ground
Other horses have also gone on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup after winning at Chepstow One of these Cool Ground ( who can be seen on the right) won several times at the Welsh track and won The Welsh National in 1991 before going on to win the blue ribbon prize at Cheltenham in 1994.
Other good horses which have been seen running here are :-
The Thinker (Gold Cup winner), Little Polvier (Grand National winner)
Banjo,Bonanza Boy,Kildimo,Esha Ness,Granville Again,Midnight Madness,
The Langholm dyer,Seagram ( Grand National winner),Run and Skip,Roll-a-Joint(Scottish National winner) Minnehoma( Grand National winner) the list is endless.

The track itself is a left handed track nearly two miles round, there are two long straights and two sharp turns.
The fences are quite stiff and the second in the home and back straights are open ditches. There is a five furlong straight ( It is a mile straight for flat races) with about a 250 yard run in.
One of the most testing aspects of the course is its undulations, which often catch out horses and jockeys.
Front runners seem to do well here, never better demonstrated than by the best jockey to ride the Chepstow course Peter Scudamore. Often when riding a Martin Pipe trained horse he would get a good lead coming down the hill and turning into the final straight and horses then found it difficult to peg him back over the rise from the turn and then down to the finish.
