Past winners of the Coral Welsh National
1987
The D.Barons trained Playschool added the Welsh National to his victories
when he won this year, He was ridden by P.Nichols and carried 10 st 11 lbs . Playschool was a good
chaser who's winning distances covered 20 to 26 furlongs and he acted on good and soft ground
1988
Bonanza Boy won this year and followed it up in the following year. he beat good horses in this year,
Run and Skip was a previous winner who could manage only second and Gold cup winner The thinker was back in 3rd place
1989
Bonanza Boy won again this year in What I thought was the best Welsh National performance I
have seen. He had to defy a top weight of 11 st 11 lbs The going was soft and he beat Cool Ground who only carried 10 st
and who went on to win the race in the following year and who also won a Cheltenham Gold Cup, Also back in the field was
little polvier who was a Aintree National winner and roll-a-Joint who won a Scottish National. He beat the field by a distance of
15 lengths A vintage winner !!!
1990
Was to see Cool Ground win the race in good style It would have been a brave man to say
this horse would go on to win this race and the Gold Cup when he won a small race here at a price of 50/1 . Another good winner.
1991
Saw the horse that was being called the new Arkle in Ireland win this race. Carvill's hill won
Giving a beating to another Aintree National winner in the form of Party Politics . The winning distances
were 20 l st/hd 20 l dist . He had so much ability it was a pity he did not get it together.
1992
Run For Free Won the race and behind him that day was yet another Grand National winner Martin Pipes
Miinnehoma and also the future winner of the race Riverside boy.
1993
Was the turn of Riverside boy to win the race after being a good second in 1992 from out of the handicap.
There was only 8 runners in this event this year but still had a good field to contend with in fiddlers pike in second and also Cool Ground in third and Wilsford in fourth.
1994
This year the race was transferred to Newbury racecourse following Frost at Chepstow and the race was won
by Master Oats who seemed to win everything this year including the Gold cup.
1995 and 1996
The race was abandoned because of frost
Please note : other previous winners will be added at a later date.
