As the runners pulled away from the start a great cheer went up from the crowd and the horses rode on down to the first bend. At the bend all the horses bunch up and there is some bumping in the middle of the field and control man comes off the worst and manages to unseat his jockey a long way before they get to a fence. As they come out of the bend and go up the hill Strong Resolve and Indalo dispute the lead with One Knight in close proximity. Next is Granit D’Estruval then L’Aventure. And Strong Resolve. As they get to the top of the hill and to the first fence, the first two jump the fence well and the following bunch jump it well with the exception of Shardam who makes a mistake. On to the second, an open ditch, One Knight gets a within a neck of the leading two who jump it together. The field that is already a little stretched out also take the fence well. At the third fence, Strong Resolve just gets the better of the other two who jump it together, no mistakes by anybody here and the race progresses to the 4th fence. This one time water jump has two hedges, which give a horse a good sight of the fence, and at it One Knight joined Strong Resolve and they lead the runners over and on to the next. At the fifth, most are going well and all jump the fence. The sixth fence can be a tricky affair as it is going downhill. At the fence One Knight meets it short and makes an untidy jump the others jump it well but Wain Mountain makes a slight mistake. As the horses run from this fence there is now a long way down the hill and around the bend to the first in the home straight, One Knight takes over the lead, Strong Resolve is second with the improving Granit D’Estruval in third, Next is Indalo then L’Aventure, Heros Collonges then Sir Rembrandt, Mckelvey, Shardam, Comply or Die and Cornish Rebel, They run around the bend and turn into the straight and start to climb uphill to the first in the home straight and the 7th in the race. At the fence One Knight is a length first and Strong Resolve is out jumped by Granit D’Estruval who takes second place, Followed by Heros Collonges and L’Aventure. The rest of the horses jump the fence and they drive on to the next. On the lead to the 8th fence One Knight and Granit D’Estruval are travelling sweetly but not so World Wide Web who is starting to get reminders at this early part of the race. The leaders jump it well and as the field follow there is about 8 lengths between first and last. At the 9th, the second open ditch, One Knight has increased his lead to two lengths and the rest of the pack are starting to close up on each other. The horses now start to go downhill and at the 10th the field jump the fence well.
The horses now run past the packed stands and One Knight is in front and going really well, next is Granit D’Estruval followed by L’Aventure Indalo and Sir Rembrandt. As they pass the winning post we still have 17 of the 18 starters but now the good pace is starting to have some effect on the horses at the back. They travel up the hill and on to the next fence. At the 12th Granit D’Estruval challenges One Knight and at the fence he gets the faster jump and gets a slight advantage, they are followed by L’Aventure and Indalo, The rest of the field do well but Native Emperor is looking very tired and his jockey pulls him up, and so on to the next open ditch. At the 13th, the two leaders open up a gap of 2 lengths on the pack and all the field remaining jump the fence well, with the exception of World Wide Web who has not really been going and his jockey pulls him up shortly after the fence. On to the 14th all again do well at this fence but some horses are starting to get left behind. Comply or Die has had enough and is pulled up. Strong Resolve is starting to loose his place in this hot event. At the 15th all the remainder jump the fence but Philson Run Makes a mistake and also a tired Present Bleu is pulled up shortly after the fence. Indalo's Rider looses an iron at this fence and starts to fall behind shortly after. At the 16th One Knight increases his lead and leads the chasing pack by three lengths, Strong Resolve is still losing places. Philson Run is pulled up and so is Mckelvey At the 17th and last in the back the leader looks good even if the pack are closing on him again. They start the long run around the bend to the home straight. One Knight in the lead and looking to be going well under his high weight, next is Granit D’Estruval then L’Aventure, Heros Collonges and Sir Rembrandt who is starting to run on, also Cornish Rebel who is starting to make great strides. Pulling up at the back is Indalo As the rise to the 18th One Knight still leads by two lengths and next is Granit D’Estruval and then three in a row Sir Rembrandt L’Aventure and Cornish Rebel. Sir Rembrandt jumps the fence but crumples on landing and is a faller. The rest get away from the fence but Shardam has had enough and is pulled up. On to the 19th and the last of the open ditches, Granit D’Estruval is starting to loose ground now but One Knight is still going well in front with L’Aventure and Heros Collonges jumping the fence together sharing second place, Cornish Rebel is finding his top weight now holding him up in fourth but he is still giving his all. Wain Mountain makes a bad Mistake but gets away with it, At the next the 20th, a plain fence, L’Aventure joints One Knight, who is also now just starting to show signs on weariness with his big weight and the pair jump the fence together and are starting to get away from the others, Next comes Cornish Rebel and Heros Collonges but they are five lengths behind the two leaders.
As the two leaders approach the last fence they are 10 lengths ahead of the field on the approach to the fence One Knight is switched to the outside of L’Aventure and L’Aventure takes the fence a length in front, he jumps the fence well, One Knight just gets to the fence a little short, he brushes through the top of the fence and on landing his front legs buckle, he is so tiered that he can't recover he goes down on his nose and throws his jockey into the air, the horses momentum make him roll over and he comes to a stop exhausted, He has given all he can under these conditions but gets up quickly and confirms his well being. L’Aventure is being pushed out already the winner before the third horse gets to the fence. L’Aventure passes the line a brave winner; he has given his all and has won the 2005 Welsh National by a wide margin. Cornish Rebel now a distance behind was so very tired at the last but runs on. Heros Collonges is next at the fence and is also running on and on the run in races past Cornish Rebel on the line to steal second place from his stable mate and Paul Nicholls has saddled the first three in this race. Next comes Crystal D’Ainay and Wain Mountain. In 6th Granit D’Estruval finishes tired and Strong Resolve is the last to finish. A fabulous race and a large winning margin for a horse that has shown a liking for this course L’Aventure If there is no menu on the left hand side click here
