Report_of_the_Day

So again it seems that the race did not let us down. The favourite did not win the race but another Chepstow regular won the race.

It remains with me that we saw a great days racing but as usual the first quarter of a mile in the homeward journey becomes a nightmare.

We left the course after the Welsh National with two other races to be run. The car park was it's usual battleground for punters leaving the course. There never seems to be any order for people leaving the course with lots of people driving badly because tempers are heated at the chaos caused by trying to leave the course, All drivers can take any route to the exit and this means you have dozens of routes all trying to converge on the one exit, At the only small exit open on the course was a police official who unlike in past years when cars are let out two abreast in order to form two lines of traffic on the road, this year the cars were let out in single file. This caused an already big problem into a huge problem. Also stopping cars leaving the course when just a few cars on the main road need to cross mean that we had lots of long "stops" and short "go's" leaving the car park. There were of course no officials to guide people leaving the course car park.

Chepstow has always suffered badly with this problem and it puts a real dampener on what is a good days racing. Chepstow just seem to let everybody to their own devices in the car park at leaving time and no thought at all about this difficulty. The Police try and do the best they can but today especially they were part of the problem and a total free for all would have got the job done quicker.

As a regular driver to The Cheltenham festival and the Aintree Grand National meetings it astonishes me that I have never had the same problems leaving these courses as you get on a standard day at Chepstow and as you can imagine the Welsh National day is much worse.

Of well it will be another year until I see quite this bad a traffic jam and the race was another classic.
